Ornithine is a non-essential amino acid that plays a central role in the urea cycle, functioning along with Arginine and Citrulline to rid the body of ammonia, a byproduct of protein metabolism.  Because Ornithine is converted into Arginine, it can help to maintain healthy Arginine levels in the body.  Ornithine can also be converted into other amino acids, such as citrulline, proline, and glutamate, as well as creatine, an important muscular energy source.*

Ornithine is important since it:

  • Induces the release of growth hormone in the body, which in turn helps with fat metabolism
  • Required for a properly functioning immune system and liver.
  • Assists in ammonia detoxification and liver Rejuvenation
  • Helps healing and repairing skin and tissue and is found in both these body parts.
  • Unsupported claims that Ornithine promotes muscle building, but this has not been proven.
  • Helpful for people recouping after surgery and athletes may benefit from this nutrient
L-Ornithine is a nonprotein amino acid. It is used in the body in the biosynthesis of L-arginine, L-proline and polyamines. L-Ornithine is a basic amino acid, positively charged at physiological pH. It is also known as alpha,delta-diaminovaleric acid and 2,5-diaminopentanoic acid.

ACTIONS

L-Ornithine has putative anabolic, immunomodulatory and wound-healing activities.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

L-Ornithine may at very high doses—around 30 grams—stimulate the pituitary release of growth hormone by virtue of its metabolism to L-arginine (see L-Arginine).

Burn injury and other traumas affect the status of L-arginine in the various tissues of the body. De novo synthesis of L-arginine during these conditions is probably not sufficient for normal immune function, nor for normal protein synthesis. Under these conditions, L-ornithine may have immunomodulatory and wound-healing activities, again, by virtue of its metabolism to L-arginine.

USAGE

It is claimed that ornithine has anabolic effects and improves athletic performance, that it has wound-healing effects and is immuno-enhancing. There is little support for these claims. There is at least preliminary evidence, however, that the better-studied ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate may have some of these activities. Inasmuch as ornithine is metabolized to arginine, which also demonstrates some of these effects, it is possible that ornithine, when more thoroughly studied, might exhibit some similar effects. See Arginine and Ornithine Alpha-Ketoglutarate.

A non-essential amino acid. Ornithine can be fabricated from Arginine, is very similar in structure. Most effective used in a stack. Take 2 - 3 grams per day.

Ornithine is similar in structure to Arginine. It is also widely used to boost HGH. According to authors Dirk Pearson and Sandy Shaw, it has double the effectiveness of Arginine at the same dosage. The usual dosage is 2 - 3 grams.

L-Ornithine, an amino acid, is manufactured by the body when another amino acid, Arginine, is metabolized during the production of urea (a constituent of urine). Animal research has suggested that L-Ornithine, along with Arginine, may promote muscle-building activity in the body by increasing levels of anabolic (growth-promoting) hormones such as insulin and growth hormone. L-Ornithine is also said to increase the metabolism of fat. L-Ornithine can be changed into L-Arginine in the body and it functions similarly in growth hormone release. Should not be given to children unless prescribed by a physician.

L-Ornithine is an amino acid that has been used by fitness enthusiasts for years. L - Ornithine is a non-essential amino acid and is manufactured by the body. Since the body can produce Ornithine, a deficiency of this non-essential amino acid is rare and it is abundant in protein foods such as meat, fish, dairy, and eggs.
